Silenced Voice Faded Smiles

Crime Against Women

Shadows crept across the wall
Shadows of beasts she fears most;
Alone in the dark, she's lost
“Catch her, take her to the hall”
“Help Help!!” No one hears her call
Taped, slapped and killed her almost.
Force-drugged her and off she dozed
What passed next she can't recall.
Found herself in the morning
At a place she never knew;
“Why is my down there bleeding?”
“Why are my arms black and blue?”
This is India, dear lady.
Land of Saree and Belly.

It was the same morn, the day she last spoke-
Spoke of how three ghosts took her chastity;
Now lies in that box, girl of half forty.
Hangs down the red fan with that blood-soaked cloak.
To her eyes, the suspect is all menfolk-
Who're the three beasts? Still is a mystery.
"They've got not a cent, who're we to worry?"
Said the man of law, “Let it fade like smoke”
That night, the girl fought the beasts all alone
She'd no choice when her orange top was torn.
But woke up in the morn with cries and groan.
What has become of her? Where's she rested?
Her sweet voice, her smiles, everything faded.

  8. I hardly know what to say, very poignant. I think it makes it more touching and sad knowing that this isn't fiction. It's what happens.

  10. Hi Naresh, I'm a new follower from the campaign. Wow, this was such a heart-wrenching poem. I liked the way you retold a story about rape with ancient and mythological sounding language-it brings home the idea that it has been happening since the dawn of time and captures the monstrous nature of the crime. I also liked the rhyme scheme- the jarring half-rhymes really gave it emotional impact. Awesome work.

    1. There no hard rule that poetry should rhyme. I like poetry to rhyme just because I love the lyrical sound it creates. Thanks for appreciating :)

  12. This was very dramatic. Really evokes the brutality that exists - so sad. "Three ghosts took her chastity" - what an image that is. Very well done!

  13. If not at all in action, I'm thankful we've got words to show our contempt for such actions. Thanks Nick :)

  14. I feel like this is unique from all the ones I've read. And I've read all of them up until you at the moment! :) I was reminded of Taken (I'm not sure you've seen it) But the main character's daughter goes to Europe and then is kinda kidnapped and sold and raped. :/ It's a very torturous ordeal, you know? I think you captured that as well as the confusion.

    Good job!

    1. Yeah! Seen that movie, a good action movie based in France. Almost everyday in the city I put up, you'll get to hear a rape case or two or more. I hate these people here.

  15. What you've written here is the untold story of many victims. This is the thing against which we're trying to fight, from which we're trying to keep away.

  16. Yes, truly stated. Only if respect for women is not compromised. Crime against women in our place is alarming.

  17. Sad, horrific tale of the victims of ruthless and remorseless monsters. The most saddening fact is that the police who are supposed to be protectors and helpers turn out to be defectors in most of the cases.

    Anyways, the poem was very well written. Keep on writing.
